![]() He believed that algae blooms occurred due to a decrease in zooplankton which preys on phytoplankton. He argued that the problem could also arise from changes in the ecosystem and proved his theory through experimentation. The other winner, Professor Carpenter challenged the general perception that excessive algae blooms in lakes and rivers were caused by phosphorus inflow from surrounding agricultural land. This program explores how the concept of GNH is reflected in Bhutan’s national policies to realize happiness for its citizens, and how happiness is achieved through the GNH pillar of environmental conservation. It has been adopted as an indicator in the OECD Well-being Framework and the UN World Happiness Report and has made a significant impact on the world. This concept of GNH has provided a new perspective to modern society, where economy and efficiency were prioritized. It also strives to realize economic growth that maintains a balance between development and environmental conservation. The government considers environmental conservation and sustainable socio-economic development as essential to the happiness of its citizens. The concept of GNH, initially advocated by His Majesty the 4th King of Bhutan forms the national foundation on which the Kingdom of Bhutan is built. Stephen Carpenter, the emeritus director of the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin USA, who has been engaged in lake ecosystem research for many years. The 2022 winners are His Majesty the 4th King of Bhutan Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who introduced the concept of GNH (Gross National Happiness) to the world, and Prof. Just within Japan, this change has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of over 10 million tons * of CO 2 per year. The Blue Planet Prize is awarded every year to two individuals or organizations in recognition of their outstanding contributions to global environmental issues. Their GWPs are several hundred times lower than existing refrigerants or foaming agents, and by replacing earlier products with AMOLEA ™ Series products, it will be possible to reduce environmental loads based on life cycle assessment (LCA) to around one-tenth. The AMOLEA ™ Series of chemical products have extremely low GWP values while maintaining the same boiling points and safety characteristics as earlier products. We selected three HFOs with saturated bonds in their molecules-HFO-1234 yf, HFO-1224 ydZ, and AS-300-as new HFC-alternatives and began to market these substances commercially as the AMOLEA ™ Series. In 2018, AGC established an industrial production method for HFOs and commenced production in a commercial plant. * Source: United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), Emissions Gap Report 2019 Logo for the AMOLEA ™ Series of environmentally-friendly refrigerants and solvents ![]() This innovative technology is attracting attention as a solution to the climate change problem. ![]() A key advantage of AMOLEA ™ refrigerants and cleaning solvents is a global warming potential (GWP) hundreds of times lower than that of earlier products. The progress that we have made in one area of technology has resulted in the creation of the AMOLEA ™ Series of environmentally-friendly hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), including air conditioning refrigerants and cleaning solvents. We can no longer afford to delay action on the climate crisis.ĪGC Chemicals has dedicated itself to the vision of “Chemistry for a Blue Planet.” In line with that vision, we are focusing on research and development targeted toward the creation of products that will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. If world greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase at the current rate, the average world temperature is expected to rise by as much as 3.9⁰C by the end of this century compared with the level before the Industrial Revolution, with devastating consequences for our lifestyles and society*. In recent years there has been a global increase in the frequency of droughts, major floods, record-breaking rainfall, catastrophic storms, vast forest fires, and other natural disasters linked to climate change. ![]()
